Viewing & Editing MS Office files on a Chromebook

You can view and edit some types of Microsoft Office documents (.doc and .xls files) on a Chromebook with Chrome's built-in Quickoffice integration.
If you've uploaded a MS Word document to your Google Drive or downloaded one from the Internet, you will see a preview of it when you open that document in Drive. Click the "Download" button (down arrow) and then open the download.

It should launch Quickoffice but note that is has limited editing capabilities.

If it is a document you want to edit in Drive and possibly share with others, when you upload the MS Word document convert it to a Google Doc instead. Make sure you check the box next to "Convert documents, presentations, spreadsheets, and drawings to the corresponding Google Docs format".

Not seeing this dialog box? Then do the following steps:
Click on the gear in your Drive located in the upper left corner and go to Upload Settings.

Make sure a check mark appears next to "Confirm settings before each upload". If you run into issues, try the following troubleshooting tips: Quickoffice Integration
